This January, the Wisconsin Agri-Business Association (WABA) hosted the Wisconsin Agribusiness Classic. The Classic is an annual event that takes place at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, WI. This year’s event had a tradeshow with over 70 exhibitors. Speakers covered over 50 educational breakout session topics. Almost 1,000 people attended the event. The Classic also hosted an awards program for organizations and individuals in agriculture.

This year, WABA gave their Education Award to Dr. Rodrigo Werle for his and his lab’s work. Dr. Werle is an associate professor in plant and agroecosystem sciences and an extension scientist at University of Wisconsin-Madison. He leads the Cropping Systems Weed Science program (WiscWeeds). This program researches weed management in corn, soybean, and small grains in Wisconsin. They focus on both traditional and agroecological-based approaches to weed management. WiscWeeds shares their research on sustainable weed management through summer field days, social media, winter meetings, blog posts, and research reports. The program also centers farmers’ needs through efforts like the WiscWeeds Research Coalition. This space invites stakeholders to provide input and questions that guide future weed management research in Wisconsin. Dr. Werle has also presented at the Wisconsin Agribusiness Classic and at meetings across Wisconsin. WiscWeeds has become a main source of information for many WABA agronomy companies.
